Two Oceans and the "Cordillera"January-February 2011 First through the Lake District and then from the Pacific to the Atlantic crossing the " Cordillera". MapFrom San Carlos de Bariloche to Rawson passing via Puerto Montt, Puerto Varas, Quellón-Chacao (Isle Chiloè), Chaiten, Puerto Cardenas, Villa Santa Lucia, Futaleufú, Trevelin, Esquel, Tecka, and then along the Rio Chubut through Paso de Indios, Los Altares, Digue F. Ameghino, Dolavon, Gaiman, Trelew, Rawson ... to conclude at Playa Union. More in the detail, considered that Google Maps tracks (and associated elevation profiles), at least in this area, are not reliable at all, my topic interest remains centered on Futaleufù-Trevelin-Esquel-Tecka stretch along routes CH-7, CH-235, CH-231 (Chile) and RA-259 (Argentina). Here below the Google Maps link: http://maps.google.it/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&am...055 & z = 5Any suggestion or information is welcome into the discussion. Thanks. Corrado

Yes, my suggestion is, that you should stay near the Andes, that is near the frontier. The long stretch to the coast and also the road near the coast are a lot less interesting.
Have fun

From the Pacific to the Atlantic : “dos Oceanos y la Cordillera”. A trip through Argentina and Chile in which we alternated some parts by coach, by ship … and, of course, by our, so much beloved, bikes !!! First, roughly 2000 km from Buenos Aires to Puerto Montt (Chile) by coach, crossing East to West the whole continent passing the province of La Pampa (Argentina). Then 300 km from Puerto Montt to the Island of Chiloè (Chile) by bike, down-down till the southern port of Quellon. From here ten hours of navigation, during a terrible rainstorm, to Raul Marin Balmaceda on Chile mainland. From Balmaceda, crossing one of the most enchanting places I’ve ever seen in my life and winding-up the Rio Palena we reached the Carretera Austral, then the mythical R-40 and, finally, the much less famous R-25 !!! Something like 600-650 km from Esquel to Playa Union, on the Atlantic shore, passing through one of the most desert steppe I’ve ever seen. From Trelew a “quick” deviation to Comodoro Rivadavia and finally, from there, more than 2000 km by coach back to Buenos Aires !! THE DATESFrom January 24 to February 23, 2011 THE ROUTE link to the map I have changed the view of the map to a link. (Rennrädle - moderatorTHE PARTICIPANTSA FEW PICTURESChiloè Island (CHILE): OVERVIEW Chiloè Island (CHILE): CASTRO Chiloè Island (CHILE): CASTRO Chiloè Island (CHILE): QUELLON Raul Marin Balmaceda (CHILE mainland): the very difficult disembarking operations during a terrible rainstorm. It’s 03:00 in the morning of February the 2nd, 2011. Raul Marin Balmaceda: here starts the fabulous X-12: it looks like to be in a paradise !! The crossing of Rio Palena Arrival at “La Junta” along the Carretera Austral ... pedalling along the Carretera Austral Dawn on magic Yelcho lake Towards TREVELIN Days become hotter and hotter … therefore for four consecutive nights we are forced to start at 03:00 in the morning Along Ruta 25: Esquel, Tecka, Paso dos Indios, Los Altares, Las Plumas, Digue Florentino Ameghino, Dovolan, Gaiman Pampa de Agnia: a pit stop to fill the tanks … It is February the 12th, here the so much dreamed arrival to Trelew !!! In the direction of Comodoro Rivadavia, something like 400 km “in the middle of nothing” … The arrival to Comodoro, it’s February the 15th, 2011!!! Suburbs of Comodoro, strong wind, dust and sand everywhere !!! I could’ t resist to take a picture at the commands of this fabulous Ford Falcon class ‘72 Propaganda of yesterday !! Politics of today !! Comodoro: cars of yesterday … … and cars of today Comodoro: the relax of the “indio” … Buenos Aires: the touristic distric of “La Boca” … return to home (Milano-Linate Airport) : …oh yes, here the protagonists !!!!

Hello Corrado, thanks for the pictures of your great voyage from the other side of the wolrd. I think you had to stand some hard weather there. You use packages from Vaude Discover series. What is your experience? Are they really tight during hard rain? Do you think they will be stable for many years? I consider to buy new packages. I like the concept of Vaude more than that of Ortlieb in general. But the last Cordura series of Vaude has getting leaky within 4 years. So I'm not sure about this new Discover series.

Olà Matthias, yes indeed, most of the trip through Chiloè (Chile) and then in the mainland of Chile along Rio Palena till to reach Carretera Austral (more than one week !!!) has been under a continuous heavy rain. The new bagages (Vaude Discovery series) did withstand excellently the rain, no infiltration at all not even from the zip-pockets but, you know, it's very new equipment so I can't say now how long they'll last. Next September I'm planning a long trip in Brazil and so, surely, I'll have the opportunity to double check again their behaviour. I'll let you know. Ciao. Corrado
