Hello,

This is my first post. I am a bike commuter and need a waterproof pannier that can also be used as a backpack. Right now, the best I have found is this one from Nashbar
http://www.nashbar.com/profile.cfm?sku=9036&srccode=1142&PID=484346

But I think it's just one big area inside- my wallet, keys, chapstick, etc. will just fall to the bottom and be hard to get to if there are books and clothes in the way. Does anyone know of any models that have pockets or compartments or something inside the pannier (or at least in an area sheltered from the rain)?
So I'm looking for a pannier that:
1) is waterproof
2) can be used as a backpack as well
3) has some sort of compartments to keep track of small items

Any help??

have you looked into the Ortlieb's products line ? They build very solid and absolutely waterproof panniers/backpacks, but those usually don't have inside compartments.
I personally use a Backroller Classic pannier combined with a carrying system.
Not as comfortable as a "natural born backpack" but as long as you keep the weight under 6-7 kg you can use it extensively as day pack. I've climbed a few mountains with it.

p.s.: this one has an inside removable pocket

Hello Sean,

first of all welcome to the forum! Here you will get all the informations you may need, not only bike issues but other issues too.

It is not easy to get panniers which are waterproofed, can be used as backpack too and has a compartment. But look at the Bicycle Pannier Links. Maybe you will find something appropriated.

the Transit Duffle by Vaude does not meet many of the criteria: it's not a pannier to be hung on the rack, but rather to be laid on it; it's very large (60 or 90 l) without compartments. However, it's waterproof and can replace a couple of small panniers
The shoulder straps are removable.

I'm close to narrowing it down. I think I'm going to get something from Panpack. They seem ideal.

A waterproof pannier is a storage product that is used on cycles and motorcycles. The pannier allows the safe and dry storage of all belongings whilst out cycling or biking, be that on or off road.Single pannier with quick release multi-fit system suitable for use on most types and diameters of rear carrier. 100 waterproof with banded seams, rubber lugged fitting plates and reflective tapes
