CYCLING IN THE NIGHT.
The great fascination of cycling in no traffic and in the most absolute silence.

...Petra, please "do" it!!
Just last night, more or less at three in the morning, ABSOLUTELY alone, I was sitting just in front of the "Fontana of Contarini" in Bergamo.
Almost one thousand years of history in front of me.
"ME" ... and nothing else!!
The only noise was "myself" eating some biscuits!!
Simply wonderful, I love to stay alone, I love "SILENCE".

Especially the lower pic has some sort of a conjuring mysteriously and magically caught of fascination and flair. Stoked! Reminds me to the "Murder in the Rue Morgue" crime story I read long time ago.

During a holiday I drove along the shore of the Mediteranean Sea illuminated by the lone moon in a cold and long fall night. Beautiful scary spine-chilling. Similar arcane and 'torchalicous scenario' as yours.

Dear Conrad,

I loved those pictures, congratulations!

Though I would contend that the photographic interest of nighttime cycling is fairly limited outside towns - landscapes and mountain roads are better enjoyed by daylight. On one of my recent trips I cycled through the night because I didn't feel like stopping for accomodation. It was a memorable experience, but no pictures smile

Best regards,
Stefan

Hi Stefan,
...I understand you, it happened to me too, I was close to Mainz and that night, I remember, it was rainy, windy ...and very dark!!!
I simply couldn't find a place to sleep so I kept pedalling all the night till sunrise.
Even without pictures, the night might be really fantastic!!

Verona: "notte scaligera"

.

Definitely an hot, early August night, .. last night !!
From time to time only a warm and pretty light breeze from the nearby Alps.
So Verona last night ... beautiful and seductive as I’ve never seen it before.
Once left the car not too far away from the Basilica of San Zeno, I then stopped by in the square in front of the church and stayed for a moment with bated breath: I’m alone I'm thinking, not a single noise, in the distance the umbrellas of the bars are closed for the night and all-around it appears to be perfectly clean, tidy, somehow surreal.
I then head towards the center stopping from time to time to take photos.
In the splendid Piazza delle Erbe it seems to me impossible to ride with no one to "look at me" ... and possibly disturbing ...
Probably around there are hundreds of cameras installed at each corner and quite likely someone at the local police station (questura) ... is wondering who may be that strange cyclist who goes around the city at that time in the night.
Passing through narrow alleys and unthinkable gateways I arrive in Piazza dei Signori and immediately after aside of the unique and fantastically gothic Scaliger Tombs.
Not to far away I arrive to see the river Adige, lively enough but pleasantly quiet during these summer months; it reflects the façades of houses and the white bell tower of the cathedral.
Going "against” the river stream I arrive at the Stone Bridge, the bridge built by the Romans in the first century BC to allow the via Postojna to link Genoa to the Brenner Pass.
I then kept following the river and in the distance I could see Castelvecchio and the Ponte Scaligero, incredibly open at that hour and absolutely deserted.
It’s now almost five and before it starts to make clear I decide to head to the Arena.
Once arrived at the Arena, I could see that in an area just opposite Piazza Bra are kept most of the scenes of the operas on program, including the upcoming "Verdi's" Aida and Nabucco.
Thanks Verona !!

I also enjoy cycling in the night. Unfortunately, I did not often have the chance to do this at attractive places very often. However, a tour through nature during night can also be a nice experience.

Since my mother was born in Santa Cruz do Sul, I had already visited Brazil earlier. However, I did never go on a bicycle tour there. I could imagine that there are nice tours possible. I like the Balkan area, too. There, I have some experience with cycling in the Balkan area. Three years ago, I have been cycling from Greece over Albania, Kosovo, Montenegro, Bosnia, Croatia, Slovenia, Italy, and Austria to Germany. This year, my tour started in Montenegro and via Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria I finally reached Turkey. Already earlier I had been cycling in Bosnia and Slovenia.

By the way, "Keine Ahnung" means "No clue" ("Non ho idea"). My first name is "Arnulf" wink

... I have never been so much fond of Milan, this is true ... but, if one day and after 35 years I'd be tempted to leave, I'd still like to keep a good memory of this town.
Here below some of the most beautiful moments ... naturally in the night and by bike through some of its downtown streets!

A nice combination of photos and small videos. What camera did you use and what software to prepare this presentation?

my usual compact camera Canon G15 and the basic version of Movavi Video Editor 14 Plus, pretty cheap, yet very powerful and easy to use.

Cycling in Venice appears to be difficult due to all the small bridges etc. Are bicycles allowed there at all? At least during daytime I would not want to visit Venice by bike due to all the tourists blocking the narrow streets.

cycling in Venice is normally stricktly forbidden ... but in the deepest of the night (02:00AM-05:00AM) you can do it ... in a discrete, silent and respectful way.
