I personally don't like the practice of using charity for media coverage. I think many of these guys are just hypocritical and pocket some of the charity money themselves.

Better I found, when two girls on their world bicycle tour got sponsered by the local radio station and they made calls over the telephone regularly and the radio listeners could hear their story and even ask questions. Work for pay or write a book about the adventure is ok too. Using charity is shameless, unless you are someone like Lance Armstrong, who is credible, having had cancer himself. Otherwise it is a scam in my opinion.
