My partner and I will be travelling by tandem through Equador and Peru from May to August. I have heard that men wearing shorts are frowned upon because it goes against the 'macho' male image. Is this true?

Dear Pete,

please notice, that the macho image is not a value worth to support and to maintain. If you are riding bicycle it's normal to have shorts. If people don't understand that, it's the problem of the others. Think of the great mountain riders at the Tour de France from Colombia.

Hi,

don't worry. You can wear shorts. South american travel cyclists also ride in shorts. It is not very common in cities and everyday life but totally ok when practicing sports.

Have fun

Underway in Switzerland

I would recomend long clothes, most cyclists wearing short clothes in south america I met had an intensive red colour grin

Enjoy riding

Hello,

shorts are OK for cycling as others have pointed out. However, I would argue that cultural sensitivity goes a long way. In situations where you think it's appropriate to wear long pants, you should. Take small towns for instance and the like.

Just my two cents ...

Best,

Markus
